5 Cool Facts About Singles’ Day

5 Cool Facts About Singles’ Day

If you asked the universe for steep discounts on the items in your shopping wishlist, you’re in luck: Singles’ Day, the biggest shopping holiday in Asia, is coming up! Its popularity is still growing in the West, but past Singles’ Day events have already seen record-breaking sales figures that have far eclipsed major shopping events in the U.S. Here’s what you need to know about this holiday:

Singles’ Day was a holiday created by college students.

Singles’ Day was reportedly started in 1993 by four male dormers at Nanjing University who, in a bid to break the monotony of singlehood, agreed to hold events celebrating their relationship status (or lack thereof).

The Singles’ Day Shopping Festival started in 2009.

In 2009, the Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba capitalized on Singles’ Day by offering massive promos. 27 merchants participated in its first year, generating around 50m yuan (around 7m USD) in sales.

It’s mainly an online shopping event.

Other Asian e-commerce companies have since joined the Singles’ Day bandwagon, launching their own Singles’ Day promotions. Online shopping discounts are combined with offline entertainment, such as televised events studded with Hollywood a-listers, to further stoke the shopping frenzy.

The sales generated from Singles’ Day is larger than the figures from Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday combined.

In 2018, over 180,000 brands participated in Singles’ Day, raking in an estimated $30.8 billion in sales over a 24-hour period. In contrast, Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday only generated a combined $16.14 billion in gross merchandise volume.

It’s gradually spreading globally.

E-commerce retailers outside of Asia are slowly but surely adopting Singles’ Day, launching Singles’ Day campaigns of their own. Expect bigger discounts and better deals this year!

Now, what can YOU do to help honor our loyal army veterans? Read on to learn some small acts of service that can go a long way.

Volunteer at a VA hospital

There are VA hospitals all over the U.S. that cater to the needs of military veterans who have served our country bravely. This is one of the best ways you can show your support to your local veterans. In the U.S., there are over 75,000 volunteers at VA hospitals across the country, contributing a total of 12 million volunteer hours. This saves VA hospitals more than $232 million every year.

Donate or send gifts to the VA

If you’re a bit pushed for time, considering donating cash or gifts to the VA instead. Money always helps to keep veterans’ lives running smoothly, especially if they were significantly injured in battle. The VA receives over $77 million in donations and gifts every year, so why not join in and let our veterans know how much you appreciate them?

Send care packages to deployed military personnel

Perhaps you know a veteran who has recently been deployed for duty once again. If so, official bodies such as military.com can provide you with many ideas of packages to send to someone who is deployed. Of course, there are certain limits as to what you can send, but food enhancers such as relish, ketchup, and spices are common, in addition to home comforts such as scrapbooks, mementos, or songs. If you wanted to get really creative, you could even send a Nixplay Frame featuring pictures of their friends and family back home.

Pay your respects

It doesn’t matter if you know people in them or not, the United States National Cemetery System is open to all visitors. All Americans can pay their respects to their fallen brothers and sisters on Veteran’s Day by visiting their graves and reading their names. Reading each fallen veteran’s personal name and standing atop their resting place helps to humanize these men and women–it makes them more than just a number, a statistic, or a general group of people.

5 Great Ways To Celebrate Single’s Day (No Matter Your Relationship Status)

Single’s Day—11/11—is coming up, and you don’t have to be a solo flyer to celebrate this event. Here’s how you can commemorate the holiday, regardless of your relationship status.

1. Go on (or set up) a blind date.

To our single readers out there: If you’re still undecided about going on that blind date your pals have been offering to set you up on, we’re here to tell you to go for it. Don’t set your expectations too high, focus on having a great time, and you might just end up pleasantly surprised. And if you’re happily coupled up, use this opportunity to bring together two friends who you think would be perfect for each other. Who knows, your matchmaking skills might be on point!

2. Dine alone.

The mere thought of dining alone can make a lot of people uneasy. If you can relate, well, it’s high time you quash your fears! Get a table for one at your favorite restaurant, savor every bite of your meal, and use your me-time to observe your surroundings or do some light reading.

3. Treat yourself!

Celebrate Single’s Day in the best way possible: By treating yourself! It doesn’t have to be a major splurge—whether it’s a cupcake from your favorite bakery or the pair of sneakers you’ve been eyeing for a long time, the important thing is that your purchase brings you joy.

4. Live by the rule of 1.

The Chinese celebrate Single’s Day by only using things that have the number 1 or are shaped like the number 1. If you’re part Chinese, you can join the fun by eating deep-fried dough sticks and exchanging stick-shaped presents like toothpicks or pencils.

5. Have a spa day.

Single’s Day is the best day to treat yourself to some quality me-time at the spa. You don’t need anyone with you when you’re getting a massage, after all! While you’re at it, why not get a haircut or a manicure as well?

What is Singles’ Day?

Singles’ Day is quickly becoming a global shopping festival, Nixplay digital photo frames answers the main question on your mind, “What is Singles’ Day?”

Are you weary of seeing people in relationships everywhere you look? Especially on Valentine’s day, when they give the flower and chocolate industries an undeserving boost in sales? You’re in luck.

In the 1990’s, a group of students in China began to celebrate being single- as a sort of “anti-valentines day”. Taking its name from the date 11.11- this day has spiralled into a global phenomenon called Singles’ Day.

Adept readers of the Nixplay family have already identified that the name 11.11 consists of one.one.one.one, aptly matching the celebration of being single. Additionally, it’s often referred to as “bare sticks” holiday in China, because of the way it looks. ( But, with $20 billion in sales on singles’ day in 2016, it’s clear that people are quite happy being “bare sticks.”)

On Singles’ Day, young men and women use the opportunity to go to karaoke bars, movies and just generally, hang out without needing a significant other. But it was only in 2009, that Singles’ Day sprawled into an online shopping spectacle. Ecommerce giant Alibaba ( deemed as the largest online commerce company in the world, by Wall Street Journal), turned it into an online shopping frenzy. Now, most ecommerce channels in China offer discounts to consumers on 11.11. From facials to digital photo frames, you can gift yourself anything on 11.11, Singles’ Day . Let us know in the comments section below whom you buy your Nixplay digital photo frames for!

Plus, shopping on Singles’ Day won’t burn a hole in your wallet because everything is on discount on 11.11 in China. Singles’ Day is often compared to the likes of Cyber Monday and Black Friday in the west, except it’s bigger. According to Forbes, it is now the biggest online shopping event in the world.
