Jodi Bondy How Nixplay became one of my Favorite Photo Devices

How Nixplay became one of my Favorite Photo Devices

I am the oldest child in our family. I am a mom of three and a grandma of five. Life can get hectic, and keeping track of photos should not cause stress and headaches for anyone.

The Nixplay frames we have purchased have been one of the best investments we could have made. Let me tell you why.

As I was growing up I was always an organizer; cleaning cupboards, closets, and keeping mementos from trips and important events. I was fortunate to have a large extended family, and listening to their oral history was a wonderful way to spend a lazy summer afternoon on the breezeway eating homemade ice cream. I  loved hearing those stories but did not give it much thought to ever write them down. After all, there wasn’t going to be a test at the end, right?

So years passed and the storytellers began to leave this earth, and with them, their stories. I decided I needed to capture them so that I could pass them onto the next generations and incorporate them into my scrapbooks (when I would finally be ready). So I spent several days interviewing my Papa and recalling all the things he told me (I believed them all to be true). Because of this, I will now be able to share my father’s memories with my grandkids, even if I don’t have the pictures to “show” the story.

Fast forward to when my husband and I became parents for the first time and lived over 20 hours away from our families. Of course, we were taking tons of pictures to document our new addition, and Mom would be asking weekly for new photos. So I would dutifully head to the photo store to get double prints and then send one set off to Michigan.

However, this process started to become a burden. Chasing a toddler around took more time than I planned. A lot of times, the photos didn’t get printed or they didn’t get sent.

I tried to keep it up, but it was not a priority for me and the next phase of sharing photos became a calendar for the upcoming year. And the photos were from LAST year. It was at least an easy way to send photos, but it was not very timely. Mom and Dad didn’t seem to care, but I was bothered by the fact that they were now seeing memories from over twelve months ago. It was not a perfect solution, but it was the fix of the day.

Our kids have since graduated, moved out, married, and started having children of their own. Now I was the grandma, and I WANTED those pictures to see my littles doing everyday things. And the funny thing is that we lived within an hour of our kids still, but did not see them on a daily basis. So I would ask them to email me some photos.

Usually, I would not get any (was I that daughter to my mom?). Then I joined Facebook to see the photos they would post (so I can blame my kids for getting me hooked on social media!) and then try to save the ones I felt were memory-worthy. It was a difficult task, as each snapshot fit the bill.

I was trying to keep up with sending photos to our family in Michigan so they could be engaged in our lives, but it was just not the most efficient way to do things.

Then along came Nixplay.

I bought a frame for my parents, set it up, and I kept control over the account so all they had to do was to plug it in and connect to the internet. I shared the email for the frame with my kids, my sister, and her kids.  I told them all to send photos when they took them. Now I did not have to be the middle man!

And they did share. Maybe not immediately on the day when the photos were taken, but they would send pics from their phones when they had the chance to sit down and review them. And I was able to scan some older photos from our collection and share them. This was a gamechanger.

I can go into the account from my computer and remove duplicates (because my mom still adds photos she sees on Facebook when they have already been sent to the frame) and make sure photos are showing up on the correct frames. Yes, frames, plural: My family now maintains two frames, one in Michigan at my Mom’s, and one at our home in Indiana. I am able to add captions to the photos if the sender does not–it’s necessary as those little girls all look alike at some point in time. We love being able to sit and watch the frame, and it’s usually better than what is on television.  And it was such a wonderful way to keep my parents engaged in the lives if their grandkids and great-grandkids.

When Dad was battling cancer, the frame brought him great joy while it displayed photos of the people he loved, and I felt like my kids did a great job of keeping them updated. Now that he is gone, Mom is able to have family “moving” through her day on the screen.

Our Nixplay is one of the first things our grandkids run to when they arrive at our house. They love to watch the pictures scroll through the collection. And this is how they have been able to learn the names of the members of our family and how they knew about their grandpa. Even though some of them have never met my dad, they know who he is and will talk about him.

I love to watch the kids watching the frame. It makes my heart fill with love. I am so glad I found Nixplay, and it is now like a member of the family. And because of our frame, other family members and friends have also purchased frames of their own and have brought them into their lives.

I am so happy to see that visual history is now being recorded, and that there will always be stories tied to these photos that need to be recorded for future generations. Photos deserve to be displayed–now, think about how many images would still be locked away in phones, online clouds, or boxes if we didn’t have Nixplay.

Nixplay-2K-Photo-Frame-main-image-digitalphotoframe-review

A 2020 review of the tack-sharp 2K Nixplay Smart Photo Frame: get ready to be spoiled

This is a review from thedigitalpictureframe.com. Read their other Nixplay reviews here.

This is the third Nixplay WiFi photo frame that I have reviewed. I believe there is a good reason why the company is the global market leader for digital photo frames: They just have the best soft- and hardware in the mid-size frame segment that they are in.

In this review, I will take a closer look at the 9.7 inches Nixplay Smart Photo Frame, which is the 2K model of the “Smart” product line. This means that you can expect the screen to be tack-sharp.

What people expect from digital photo frames

With the Coronavirus in 2020, “keeping in touch” became a predominantly virtual matter for some time. Video conference tools gained in popularity because it gave us all a much better feeling of working together than just listening to group phone calls. And yet, easy to set up video-conference software has been around for over twenty years. But only now, they became fully accepted.

I’d like to think that the same is true for digital picture frames. They have been around for ages, but the quality of the hardware and the user-friendliness of the software left a lot to be desired. But recently, they seem to pop up everywhere.

Although different customer segments will have different requirements, the average consumer first and foremost expects ease of use. And since many photo frames are given as a present to parents and grandparents to keep in touch with the family, people expect a way to service them remotely.

This is where many sins have been committed. The software was an afterthought in many companies when it should be the first step in the design.

What Nixplay consistently does right

So it was no surprise that many companies have appeared on this market and quickly left again. The mid-size segment has been especially crowded with brands slapping their logo on some white label “China” frames with no genuine passion for photo frames.

Don’t get me wrong. The best electronics manufacturers are in China and other Asian countries. But if the objective is to bring down costs to the minimum, the quality will suffer.

I currently see only one brand that is starting to become a household name in mid-range wifi photo frames and that is Nixplay.

Personally, I am not even much interested in a digital picture frame that is smaller than 24 inches, and I like to build them myself. But when friends & family ask me which brand to buy in the mid-size segment, I recommend Nixplay.

There are two reasons for my judgement.

One the one hand, they overall have the best software for digital picture frames. It is (relatively) easy to use and has all the bells and whistles that you need. Especially, it can remotely control other frames, i.e., to add pictures and change the settings. This works as long as the other frame is connected to WiFi.

On the other hand, the hardware is solid. Nixplay has come up with a very clever patented solution for the cable problem of picture frames and turned it into a stand. And no USB card can break or is hard to insert. And third, the design is available in several styles, so everyone should find something compatible with their style.

There are two things that you have to be comfortable with: You need a WiFi connection, and your photos are stored in the Cloud. If you don’t like either, you have to look at non-wifi frame models. Nixplay also has those, but they are not available on their homepage but on Amazon.

The 9.7 inches Nixplay 2K Smart Photo Frame

I was recently given a review unit of the 9.7 inches Nixplay Smart Photo Frame which is the 2K model of the “Smart” product line.

2K means that the screen has a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels , the “2K” always refers to the long side of the display.

This frame is part of the Nixplay Smart Photo Frame series that come in sizes of 9.7, 10.1, 13.3, and 15.6 inches.

Only the 9.7 inches version has the ultra-high-resolution 2K display. I guess this is why it’s also just as expensive as the 15.6 inches model which only has a display resolution of 1920 x 1080px.

However, the screen size is only one difference. Just as important is the aspect ratio of these models.

The 2K model has a ratio of 4:3, which is typically what a photo that was taken with a mobile phone has. Since most of today’s photos are taken with a mobile, it makes a lot of sense to have the same screen proportions as otherwise too much of your image would be cropped in full-screen mode.

The 10.1 frame has a 16:10 aspect ratio, which is about what a DSLR (3:2) is at. The 13.3. and the 15.6 models both come with 16:9, which is great for videos but not so much for photos. I could talk about hours about this subject but let me just say, there are many reasons why I prefer 16:10 or 4:3 displays.

A tack-sharp display

The funny thing with high-resolution displays is that you don’t notice the difference immediately. But the more you look at a high-resolution (Apple calls them “Retina”) display, the more details you discover. And when you then go back to a low-resolution screen, you’re ready to go to the optician because you think there is something wrong with your eyes.

So, a word of warning here. Once you get used to a high-resolution display, there is no way back. Just try to take an Apple iMac 5K away from someone and give him a 1920×1080 monitor (which used to be considered HD!). Good luck!

The screen of the 2K is super sharp and you will discover many details on your photos. It is glossy but it is not prone to showing reflections.

This frame is currently the best in its class in terms of display quality. And the fact that it has an aspect ratio of 4:3 makes it ideal for family & friends photos taken with a mobile phone.

If you are a photographer and you need a small WiFi photo frame, you may be better served with the 16:10 ratio found in the slightly larger 10.1 model. But then again, in your profession, you would probably want a 40 inches 4K frame anyway.

The 2K screen comes at a premium of about $100. Is it worth it? Maybe not because the other Nixplay models also have great displays but, personally, I can’t have enough pixels!

The Nixplay software is still the industry benchmark

I have talked a lot about the Nixplay software and have even written two articles to get you started with a computer or a mobile device.

The good thing is that Nixplay hasn’t changed much in that software since I first published the articles in 2019. And why should they? It is very user-friendly and offers plenty of options the way it is.

What is especially well thought through is the initial setup process after you first unbox the frame. The only thing you need to have nearby is the password of your WiFi network. Once that is entered via the remote control, you can continue on your mobile phone.

The Nixplay software lets you manage all your Nixplay frames with one account and app. This means that you can share your playlists on all connected frames, regardless of where they are in the world. The only thing that matters is that they are connected to a WiFi signal. They do work without WiFi as the images are downloaded to the frame, but you need the signal for photo updates.

As far as the management of your photos goes, you can either access your phone’s photo app, the Nixplay Cloud Albums, or connect it to Google Photos.

The software still offers the same selection of beautiful image transitions and has many features for customisation.

For a full overview oft the software, please check my setup tutorial for the Nixplay Seed 10.1 frame.

If I could make a wish for one future software feature, it would be the ability to see the image that is currently being played on a remote frame. Sometimes you may want to share a particular photo with your family and with a feature like this, you could all be sure that you are looking at the same thing.

Conclusion

The Nixplay 2K Nixplay Smart Photo Frame has the potential to spoil you for all other photo frames. The super sharp display is something that you take for granted quickly.

The proven quality of Nixplay’s hard- and software remains the key recipe for the company’s market success. But before you buy, check which display aspect ratio is the right one for your needs. I would argue that this is even more important than pixel density.

The frame is available in metal and black finish.

7 Great Ideas For Spending Quality Time At Home With Your Family

7 Great Ideas For Spending Quality Time At Home With Your Family

There’s no better time than the present to learn fun ways to spend quality time with your family. Keeping things fresh and exciting is the best way to bond during difficult periods and keep everyone entertained.

Here are seven great ideas for spending quality time at home with your family.

Schedule a Games Night

Set a standing date for an at-home game night. Do a weekly rotation that allows everyone to choose a game. If your options are limited, reach out to community members and do a temporary swap so that everyone gets a chance to play something new.

Instead of defaulting to the same old board games, shake things up with an RPG. Grab a D&D dice set online and start a campaign that spans over a few evenings. Alternatively, look at interactive multimedia games like JackBox, so that the whole family can play from their devices.

Have an Ultimate Movie Bucketlist

Set a timer and have everyone sit down and write their favorite movies. This is an opportunity for the parents to shine. Write down a bunch of movies from your childhood that you want to share with your children. With streaming services and online portals, it’s easier than ever to revisit your old favorites.

If you’re at a loss for what movies to include, there are plenty of lists online that outline the best family movies of all time. You can even schedule themes or marathons for extended periods of downtime.

Schedule Tech-Free Hours

Technology is both a blessing and a curse. Schedule tech-free hours in your household in which everyone leaves their phones and tablets in a common area. Use this time to come together and talk about your day or share some snacks and conversation.

Pick up a few conversation prompt cards to discover new things about the people you live with or play a rousing game of “Would You Rather?”

Get Cooking Together

Cooking is an essential life skill that children can start to learn at a young age. Empower your kids to choose a recipe each week that they’d like to make for supper. Grab the supplies and have them in the kitchen helping.

Young children can help with measuring, stirring, and collecting items. Older kids can learn how to cut food safely and cook it with supervision and help. Cooking together is a great bonding experience, and also takes the pressure off the parents for meal planning.

Schedule a Porch Project Photoshoot

The Porch Project is a family photo shoot project in which a photographer snaps a couple of pictures of your family sitting on your doorstep. The idea is that it promotes the #stayathome movement. You can create your own Porch Project photo with a smartphone.

Schedule your photo shoot as you would a regular appointment. Give everyone time to pick out a fancy outfit that they love and put themselves together. This is an excellent way to feel human, especially if you’ve been in the house for a while. Print those photos out or have them commissioned into a custom piece of art using one of these Instapainting packages.

Take an Online Course

Learn new things together by taking an online course. You can do a child-centric program like The CEO Kid or something broader that you can learn together as a family. Keep an open mind when choosing an online course and give everyone a chance to pick something that appeals to them.

Some ideas for online courses include:

  • learning a new language
  • learning how to code
  • taking dance lessons
  • personal development courses
  • fitness training (yoga, for example)
  • acting classes

Pursue your passions and learn some neat things together as a family.

Get Gardening

Gardening offers a lot of benefits to families looking to spend quality time together at home. For example:

  • It’s versatile. You can grow a garden in your kitchen window, on your balcony, or in your yard.
  • It benefits the environment.
  • You can grow healthy food to eat later.
  • You can offer seedlings as gifts.
  • It’s a science lesson.
  • It teaches responsibility.

Choose some things to grow and have your kids be responsible for various tasks. You can also create a log of your experience, with the kids adding their observations each day.

With these seven fun family activities, you have fun together while being safe at home.

Lisa Winningkoff

Meet A Photo Organizer: Lisa Winningkoff of Photos | Stories | Legacies

I’m Lisa Winningkoff, a wife, mother of two young adults, CPA, and professional photo organizer based in New Orleans. After working in a corporate role for more than 25 years, my position was eliminated as the result of a merger. Rather than mourn that loss, I looked at the experience as a gift that allowed me to design the next chapter of my life.

I knew I wanted to do something fun and creative that will delight others while making the most of my skills and background. I have been organized since childhood, and I really enjoyed creating photo albums of family vacations. It didn’t take long for me to realize that helping others preserve, share, and enjoy their photos was a dream come true. My next chapter had arrived.

As a professional photo organizer, I create libraries of memories to share and enjoy by managing lifetime collections of photos and stories. Most clients I work with have two main goals: (1) to know that their photos and memories are safe; and (2) to be able to enjoy and share them in a variety of ways. That might mean beautiful photo albums, lovely framed prints, or a digital display of their favorite moments. It’s so rewarding to see a client’s anxiety transform into relief and joy when they get the chance to see and appreciate their photos. It’s the best feeling in the world.

Since photo organizing as a career and an industry is relatively new, I had a lot to learn. I turned to trusted advisors Sherra Humphreys and Rita Norton from PPO Studio to help me hit the ground running. In addition to being trainers and business coaches, they are active professional photo organizers with VIP clients, making them an excellent resource of information. Their training proved to be invaluable in enhancing my business and technical skills.

What’s your favorite holiday photo? Can you tell us the story behind it?

One of my favorite holiday photos is of my sister and me on Christmas Eve in 1972. Christmas is such a magical time of the year, especially when you’re a child. At the time, I was five and my sister was three. There we were, standing in front of the tree in matching dresses and jumpers (and matching shoes and socks!) that our mother made for us. New Orleans weather in December is famously unpredictable—some years it’s freezing, and other years you need air conditioning to survive. It must have been on the warm side in 1972, because we were wearing short sleeves, above-the-knee dresses, and no tights.

What I like most about this vintage photo is the innocence and anticipation on our faces. If you look closely, you can see that there are few gifts under the tree. This indicates our eagerness to get on with Christmas Eve and go to sleep so that Santa could visit our home in the middle of the night to deliver our gifts. As soon as we’d wake up the next day, we’d jump out of bed, wake up our parents far too early, and rush to the tree to see what was under it.

Much has changed since 1972, but seeing this photo makes me pause, reminisce, and appreciate how sweet it is to hold on to that magical feeling.

That’s such a lovely story! We hope you’ve been able to share it on your Nixplay Frames.

Yes, and I absolutely love my Nixplay frames! I have one on my office desk and another in our living room. Sometimes when I’m working, a fun photo of my children will pop up on the frame and catch my eye. I’ll stop what I’m doing and take a little break to smile and enjoy the memories. Sometimes, if it’s a particularly silly photo, I’ll even laugh out loud.

What I love about the Nixplay frames is how the transition from one photo to the next grabs your attention in a way that a static framed photo does not. If I see a favorite photo when I walk through the living room, five or ten minutes can easily pass while I stand there just watching the show.

As a pro photo organizer, I really appreciate that I can manage the Nixplay frames remotely for my clients. I would create customized playlists for different family gatherings and occasions, and they would always attract a small crowd. One client experienced a death in her family, and she was planning a gathering at her home following the funeral. She called me to gather some photos of her loved one, but she was clearly distraught with grief and overwhelmed with everything else going on. So I told her I would handle this for her.

She was concerned it would take too long or be too much trouble, but in less than 30 minutes I was able to search her organized photo collection, select the best photos of her loved one, create a playlist, and publish it to her frame. I texted her to check if the photos were displaying, and she cried tears of joy. She was so happy to have a loving display that the rest of her family could enjoy, and I was happy to have helped her at such a difficult time.

Inevitably, people are drawn to the frames to see photos that they might not otherwise have an opportunity to view. It really is such a fun and flexible way to enjoy your photos!

Elevating Photo Organization With Nixplay

We (Sherra Humphreys and Rita Norton) are co-founders of PPO Studio, where we provide training for professional photo organizers. In addition to online courses and forms for photo organizers, we host an annual invitation-only Platinum Training event for professional photo organizers.

We started in Destin, FL and then hosted our second, third, and fourth years in Nashville, TN. This is our fifth year, and we’re back in Destin for a mastermind training, wherein we take a deep dive into photo organizing as a profitable business.

It’s a unique combination of smart businesswomen who want to connect with like-minded colleagues and bring their business to the next level. We focus on doing what it takes to build a profitable photo organizing business. Our small group training gives us the opportunity to dive deep with 1:1 conversations that uncover all sorts of business challenges that we can help them work through. We work closely with the ladies to elevate their businesses and provide them with tangible changes to implement, resulting in more profitability and increased passion for a business they already love.

As professional photo organizers, we’re always looking for ways to thrill our clients with their family photos. One of our favorite ways is through a digital frame. Once we have organized the best of the best of the client’s digital photos, loading those photos to the Nixplay website and creating a playlist for them is a beautiful way for them to enjoy their photos. Keeping a copy of digital photos on a family’s Nixplay website (cloud) is a great way to keep your photos safe. Plus, the Nixplay frame’s elegant design always impresses!

For the past two years, we have been thrilled to introduce Nixplay as our featured Premium sponsor. Nixplay gave a welcome reception, a live demonstration of their frames, and delivered a presentation of marketing ideas that taught the attendees how to “wow” their VIP clients with the Nixplay frame. We also love surprising our attendees with Nixplay Smart photo frames that they get to take home with them. The frames get better and better each year, and the HD screen quality of the frame we gave away this 2019 was no exception. Simply stunning!

With the holidays upon us, sorting through your family’s photo collection with the help of a professional photo organizer can really be magical. Those special holiday photos can all be put on one playlist in your Nixplay account and played throughout the holidays. It’s really fun to see photos in a theme and that’s how we often use the playlists for our clients. The frame sparks conversations and memories that help us all remember the stories that go with our photos. Remembering those we’ve lost and those we love…from babies to grandparents, our photos help us share stories for generations to come!
